Harris Corporation is looking for a Mechanical Design Engineer who can design major components or major portions of a functional system to develop or improve products and facilitate manufacturing operations.
Conducts engineering investigations involving the creation or modification of a current design.
Utilizes Creo CAD equipment to develop basic data and make preliminary layouts, sketches and notes necessary to present design proposals.
Performs product development activities including drawing layout and interpretation/implementation of customer specifications and documentation requirements.
Investigates and makes decisions regarding pertinent design factors such as ease of manufacture, availability of materials and equipment, interchangeability, replaceability, strength-weight efficiency, contractual specification requirements, schedule and cost.
Responsible for the design and development of parts, tooling and fixtures to support various manufacturing processes.
Candidate will create innovative designs by working with internal Program groups, Research and Development Teams and other areas of Engineering Operations where products are designed for use in Space, Aerospace and Ground applications.
Frequent communication required with both external suppliers and internal customers.
Responsible for conducting meetings and leading design reviews.
Tasked with creating detailed drawings, bills of materials, drawing release, material selection, part inspection, implementation and verification of product performance.
Responsible for providing guidance, coaching and training to other employees across Harris within area of expertise.
- Bachelor’s Degree and minimum 9 years of prior relevant experience or Graduate Degree and a minimum of 7 years of prior related experience.
Preferred Additional Skills
Minimum of 7 years of experience using CAD software: PTC Creo 4.0 (2.0 or higher) and Intralink (11.0 preferred)
Advanced understanding and application of Geometric Dimension and Tolerancing (GD&T).
Expert in drawing creation, release and revision skills.
Expert knowledge of Industry and Military standard drafting standards and practices, specifically ASME Y14.5-2009 and ASME Y14.100.
Expert user of product data management software and work with configuration management to release drawings and other documentation.
Extensive materials knowledge (aluminum, stainless steels, plastics, additive manufacturing materials).
Extensive knowledge of fasteners and mechanical hardware.
Possess a high level of initiative and willingness to learn.
Proven ability to mentor and guide other Design staff on Creo CAD and Drawing best practices.
Strong sense of responsibility, ownership and follow-through.
Excellent organizational, verbal and written communication skills.
Ability to multitask, work with team members and also independently research design solutions.
Advanced knowledge of Microsoft office tools (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
Advanced knowledge of Design for Manufacturability and Assembly (DFM/DFMA).
Able to coordinate or perform hardware installation, tooling assembly, fit checks, verification.
Able to coordinate procurement of tools and hardware.
Work experience at machine/fabrication shop.
Advanced knowledge of mechanical shop operations and technology including machining, sheet metal fabrication, welding, plating processes, and painting.
Experience with additive manufacturing / rapid prototyping techniques and equipment. Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM), Stereolithography (SLA), 3D Printing, etc.
